Euro 1972 Championships - Review & History
The Euro 1972 tournament was held in Belgium. This tournament was the fourth UEFA European Football Championship with the finals taking place between June 14th and June 18th in 1972.
Following the format of previous Euro tournaments, only 4 countries could play in the final's, with the host nation only chosen after the qualifying event was completed.
Following the group stage qualifying competition in 1970 & 1971 and the Quarter Final Qualifying in 1972, the following nations participated in the Euro 1972 finals. The hosts Belgium, Hungary, the former Soviet Union and the mighty West Germany.
West Germany and the former USSR made it to the final and two goals from their star striker, Gerd Müller and one from Wimmer ensured that West Germany won 3-0 and were crowned Euro 1972 Champion's!
