Euro 1968 Championships - Review & History
The Euro 1968 tournament was held in Italy. This tournament was the third UEFA European Football Championship with the finals taking place between June 5th and June 10th in 1968.
1968 marked the year the tournament changed its name from European Nations Cup to the European Championship, the name still used to this day.
Following the qualifying competition, a group stage format took place between 1966 and 1968. The following nations participated in the Euro 1968 finals; 1966 World Cup Winners, England plus Italy, the former Soviet Union and the former Yugoslavia.
In the semi-finals, Italy drew with the Soviets 0-0 and the match results was decided on the toss of a coin (ED: Can't imagine that happening today!) and Yugoslavia beat England 1-0. England regained some pride by beating the USSR 2-0 in the 3rd place play-off with goals from World Cup heroes Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst.
The Euro 1968 final was contested by Italy and Yugoslavia. Following a 1-1 stalemate in the first match, a replay was required and Italy were crowned Champions after beating the Yugoslav's 2-0 thanks to goals from Riva and Anastasi!
